We all know young children must be taught and reminded often of the basic principles of getting along with others.  Yet it is one more thing to add to a parent’s busy schedule; however, it can be done by taking a few minutes a day to discuss just one topic on the “What is Good Behavior,” chart — even if the discussion takes place while the children are brushing their teeth or eating breakfast! Post the “What is Good Behavior” chart on the refrigerator or bathroom wall or wherever, and ask the child, “What are we going to practice today?” Perhaps it is “Putting their things away.” Later in the day, check with the child on how they did.  If they feel they did well, praise them for their efforts. If they forgot or only remembered a couple of times, respond with, “Okay, we can keep working on this.” They are a work in progress and there’s no need to worry about consequences for forgetting – these are daily behavior “reminders” that we hope become habit for them.  Keep it simple for yourself.
